PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT ART CAN BE

Historically, my work is based on minimalism. My paintings start off as drawings. I am able to work through many composition possibilities. This process allows the work to reveal itself to me and I am not bound by traditional minimalist axiom. I strive to make my compositions not to contain any foreground, middleground, or background, but to make the shapes flip through spatial reversal. Some shapes move forward while others go back into space and vise versa. I use a limited palette of five different colors. Each color evokes a subconscious and visual response in the viewer which heightens a sense of visual drama. I focus on activating the contour of the shapes insulating and forcing the line to function as a directional device. When the line goes off the edge it extends into infinity. It can also reappear back in the picture plane completing the shape. The viewer participates in the process by finishing the shape in their mind’s eye.

I am pushing the boundaries of what art can be.
